The fake industry is one of the most damaging to the luxury world, especially in the handbags and accessories sector. That's why, from Kewaybags, we want to tell you about some of the innovations that brands have presented in relation to the authenticity of their handbags.
Louis Vuitton was the first major house to eliminate the codes (a series of two letters and four numbers) to confirm the authenticity of its products, replacing them with a chip that, in their case, is hidden somewhere inside the lining. Since March 2021, the handbags produced by Vuitton will store all the information about them in this chip.
The second major house to make the leap to the world of microchips is Chanel. Until now, the French brand attached an authenticity part to its pieces that brought a code that had to match the code number placed inside the bag. Since mid-2021, these authentication methods have disappeared. They have been replaced by a metal plate (about an inch - 2.5 centimeters - in size), with the intertwined double C of the brand and under which an alphanumeric code of 8 digits will be placed.
This plate, which will be the same color as the rest of the bag's hardware to give it uniformity in aesthetics, will serve to certify authenticity, but also to track the bag's life cycle, from the manufacturing date to possible repairs, including purchase data.
It is this small plate, where the microchip will be inserted, that will now replace the classic serial sticker. These chips, almost impossible to replicate, will make it more difficult for the fake industry; as well as blockchain technology (data storage), they will also use NFC technology (which allows sharing). The chips can only be read in Chanel boutiques.
