The true story of Louis Vuitton

Louis was born in a small village in eastern France in 1821, descended from carpenters, farmers, and dressmakers, young Louis would take a few years to realize his true talent: high fashion. Before discovering his true vocation, the French designer traveled throughout the country until he arrived in Paris and started working in a successful workshop for the manufacture of trunks and cases.

In 1854, at the age of 33, Louis opened his own workshop, the “Atelier,” and ventured into the design and manufacture of trunks and packaging. Quickly, the quality of his creations would make him a reference designer of leather goods among the French high society of the time. In this way, his brand grew during the following decades until 1885 when he opened his first store in London. Even then, the Louis Vuitton brand constantly had to deal with one of its usual problems: the constant counterfeiting of its products.

In 1892, at the age of 71, Louis Vuitton passed away and the company came under the leadership of his son George Vuitton, who turned the brand into an international emblem and promoted its internationalization during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Under George's leadership, in 1913 the company opened one of its most iconic establishments, its store on the Champs-Elysées. By then, no one in France wondered who Louis Vuitton is.

The control of the brand passed down from parents to children and gained popularity and prestige throughout its history. After George Vuitton's death in 1936, it was his own children who continued the legacy of their grandfather and father, continuing with the international expansion of the brand during the following decades.

Contribution and legacy of the brand

Louis Vuitton is a high-fashion company associated with luxury and quality. It is one of the most valuable brands in the world and is considered by experts as one of the most powerful fashion brands today. Likewise, despite the brand's intense fight against fraudulent copies of its products, its popularity and prestige have also made it one of the most counterfeited brands in the market.

If Louis Vuitton can boast of something, it is being true to its origins, maintaining its spirit of delicate craftsmanship since the brand was founded in 1854. Still today, more than 160 years later, young people know who Louis Vuitton is. This is not only due to the high quality of its products but also to its way of creation. It is said that the production of its products is still artisanal and the making of one of its trunks can take about 60 hours.

Likewise, its flagship product, Louis Vuitton luxury bags, continue to be a unique and exclusive product. And it is that, despite having more advanced manufacturing technologies, its production still relies on artisanal assembly methods, just like those used by Louis more than 168 years ago.
