Although it is one of the most recognized brands in the world of luxury accessories, not everyone knows what a Cartier is or what is the origin of its essence. And it is essential to talk about its icons, or those representative elements that have given it its history until its current status, to answer what is a Cartier.
To talk about its origins, Cartier was founded in 1847 in Paris by jeweler Louis-François Cartier. He was responsible for some of the company's most famous designs, such as the "Mistery clock," so named for its hidden mechanism. Soon, his son Alfred joined the company and over the years inherited its administration. But it was not his son, but his grandchildren, who elevated the brand, also known as the "King of Jewelers, Jeweler to Kings," to the most recognized in jewelry and watchmaking.

In 1904, pioneering Brazilian aviator Alberto Santos-Dumont mentioned to his friend Louis Cartier the difficulty of using pocket watches during his flights. Cartier designed a flat wristwatch with a distinctive square bezel. The "Santos" watch was Cartier's first wristwatch for men.
Among Cartier's team was Charles Jacqueau, who joined Louis Cartier in 1909 for the rest of his life, and Jeanne Toussaint, who was director of Fine Jewelry from 1933 and creator of the legendary Cartier Panther.
Another of its icons, designed by Louis Cartier, is the Tank watch model introduced in 1919. Its design, born from one of the darkest moments in history, the First World War and its tanks, has been and will be one of the great watches sought after by collectors and lovers of the brand.
The panther is a symbol of its identity, designed by Barbier through his work "Woman with Panther." This animal is present in many of the jewelry designs, and a clear example is the mythical women's wristwatch called "Panther."
Today, there are some elements that allow us to identify if a Cartier watch is original. The first is the brand name since all watches have the name printed on the dial, very well defined and enduring. Another identifying element is the serial number, always engraved on the back or, in other cases, on the side of the original case.
